Explanation needed- physics help- projectile motion?

If you drop a ball its initial velocity in the down direction (y-axis) is zero but it immediately accelerates downward due to gravity. The motion of the car falling through a gap must be yzed separately in the horizontal direction (x-axis) which remains constant neglecting wind resistance and in the vertical direction (y-axis) as though falling from rest. The combined path is curved downward.
