Should my boyfriend have gotten me a gift for Valentine's Day?

My boyfriend's birthday is today, which is also Valentine's Day. As a gift, I gave him a couple of the seasons of Seinfeld on DVD and he was stoked because he loves that show. But he didn't give me anything for Valentine's Day. A few days ago I casually asked what he was getting me for V-Day and he jokingly (or so I thought) said that he didn't have to get me anything because it was going to be his birthday. Should he have gotten me a gift, or is he exempt from giving me one because it's his birthday?
