I have a polaroid pport camera, and the pictures I take from it has shadows on the back of the head.?

What can I do to eliminate such shadows? Are backlighting (illuminating the background) really effective? Is this enough? What's the best lighting to use, how strong shall I illuminate the background? Please help.
